Cognos's PowerPlay heads up this month's "power" tools
Cognos Inc. announced the release of PowerPlay Server Web Edition 5.5. PowerPlay Server Web Edition offers enterprisewide multidimensional analysis of data via the Web browser interface.
New features of this version include:
- Distributed processing and load balancing using separate dispatch server for better performance and scalability. Distributed processing and load balancing allow companies with large user communities to set up multiple servers, and the product's central dispatch server automatically ensures that processing is conducted on the least occupied server.
- PowerPlay users also have cube-to-cube drill through to move between PowerPlay data sources (PowerCubes). Users can access PowerCubes posted in databases in LANs to enable multidimensional analysis via the Internet or an intranet from a Web browser interface.
- Support for Unix servers, along with the existing Windows NT support.
- A Java-based administration application that allows for server optimization and administration from multiple platforms. Administrators can monitor and optimize server management from any platform.
PowerPlay Server Web Edition pricing begins at $40,000 for a 100-user NT server license and at $75,000 for a 200-user Unix server license.

The Power of Persistence
Persistence Software Inc. introduced PowerTier, a system that accelerates standard Web and client/server applications. Power-Tier accelerates applications using a memory cache that stores frequently used business information, which allows it to provide faster response to users. It updates changes in the database as necessary. Additionally, PowerTier can perform multiple tasks simultaneously in a single user session--a feature called parallel application processing.
PowerTier's real-time notification system, ProActive Agents, notifies users immediately when data of interest is updated. The agents communicate with clients using standard CORBA messaging.
PowerTier supports CORBA, UML, Java, Visual Basic, and C++ for developing client and server logic; Unix and Windows NT design deployment environments; and open APIs for integration with other systems and tools.
Pricing for PowerTier developers licenses begins at $8,000 per developer. Deployment licensing pricing begins at $10,000 per server.

Synon Serves Up Obsydian
Synon Corp. announced the release of two products: Obsydian for Java and Obsydian 3.0.
Obsydian for Java provides automatic generation of portable, Java-based server applications. With it, users can automatically generate code from existing Obsydian design models. Customers can deploy the generated applications on any platform running a Java Virtual Machine.
Obsydian 3.0 is the latest version of Synon's model-based client/server application-development environment. Users design their systems once and then automatically generate those applications for new platforms and technologies.
Obsydian's ability to define and reuse business objects and automatically generate code speeds the implementation of enterprisewide systems. It uses class libraries of business objects (or "patterns"), which facilitates the development of scalable enterprise applications.
Synon upgraded Obsydian to a 32-bit development architecture in this release. Additionally, Synon added new toolbars and graphical controls to improve the user interface, improved diagrammers, and simplified model and tool configuration. Obsydian also includes extended support for component standards, such as ActiveX.

SAS Gets to the Other Side
SAS Institute's Enterprise Reporter lets users create reports from data warehouses and decision-support systems and disseminate the results both on hard copy and online.
Enterprise Reporter completes SAS's end-to-end solution for data warehousing, OLAP, and presentation-style reporting. It provides a way to allow analysts to query data and generate customized reports. The software is report-centric, letting users first choose the structure that matches the topic and audience, then discover the facts, and finally communicate the facts using that predefined structure.
Enterprise Reporter is designed for Windows 95 and Windows NT-based PC users and has the look of Microsoft Office. It works in a client/server environment and supports multidimensional as well as traditional forms of data (relational, hierarchical, flat files, and so on).
Pricing for Enterprise Reporter ranges from $299 per user for 50 users to $99 per user for 1,000 or more users.
